Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, most people want a toned body, flat abs, and a nice butt. After all, looking good may be one of your motivating factors for working out. Building cardiovascular endurance and gaining strength are great. But let’s face it, most people want to look great even when naked.

It’s not breaking news that genetics play a role in your body shape. Your height, bone size, and even whether you’re prone to developing a beer belly is determined in part by your genes.

But you can’t blame everything on genetics. You also have a lot of control over how your body looks. So if you’re pear shaped, have a flat butt, or a spare tire, you don’t have to accept it. There are several things you can do to have the body you want.

Nutrition is the foundation of a great body

A good place to start is your diet. You can exercise hours a day, but it’s all in vain if your diet is poor. Mastering your nutrition can help you build lean muscle, get cut, and avoid storing excess fat.

Eat a variety of foods at every meal to get a combination of healthy fats, protein, and carbs in the right proportions. Avoid refined carbs, such as bread, pasta, and fried foods. Instead, opt for complex carbs, such as quinoa, brown rice, and steel cut oatmeal, which are packed with fiber to keep you feeling full. Also, be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies — especially leafy greens — which add volume to your meals without adding a lot of calories.

Build your dream body with the right exercises

Exercise is also a must to look good both in and out of your clothes. Cardio is great to burn fat and help you get lean. But if you’re going to change your shape, you need to do strength training. Keep in mind, everyone’s idea of what makes a great body may be different. But there are a few features that tend to be universally admired, such as a tapered waist, firm butt, and toned arms and chest. So whether you’re a man or woman, consider adding some or all of these proven body-sculpting exercises to your workout routine.

Side planks

If you want sexy abs, you need to work all abdominal muscles including your obliques, and side planks are a great exercise to do it. Be sure to use proper form. When you lift your hips, your body should be one straight line.


Squats build your legs and a better butt. When doing a squat, don’t allow your knees to come over your toes, which puts too much pressure on your quads. Your weight should be on your heels, which works the glutes.


The deadlift is a great exercise because it works a number of different muscles including your hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. Start the move with a neutral spine with your butt pushed back and head and chest up. The bar should be close to your shins. Lift the bar driving up with your legs, not your back.

Overhead press

Both men and women often want that V-tapered look. An overhead press works your shoulders, which helps make your waist look more narrow.


Pullups work your latissimus muscles, which also help you get a V-tapered look. Try different grips including underhand and overhand to see what gives you a more intense workout. Grip width also can be adjusted. A shoulder width grip is normally preferred, because it usually reduces the chance for injury vs. a wide grip.
