When you start to get bored, hit a plateau, or otherwise lose some of your drive, don’t give in and give up. Instead, incorporate some or all of these 10 tips into your workout routine to keep your fitness motivation running high!

1. Do different exercises

Performing new exercises that challenge you in different ways not only adds something new and interesting, but also encourages better results. Instead of dumbbells try a cable machine, or add something different like kettlebells or plyometrics to your routine.

2. Try new training methods

Lifting weights is fun and effective, but can start to feel stale sometimes. Try a new training method like suspension training (TRX), Yoga, or martial arts to add some variety to your workout.

3. Change your schedule

Doing the same thing at the same time can make you feel like you’re stuck in a rut. Shake things up and try training in the morning instead of the evening, or vice versa. Or add a short workout during your lunch hour.

4. Change your environment

Your surroundings can also get tiresome. Try training at a different gym or facility and get a lift from a new environment, equipment, and people.

5. Freshen up your diet plan

Diet fatigue can also lead to failure to perform at the gym. Make an effort to try some new foods, seasonings, recipes, and approaches to your nutritional goals.

6. Add new physical activities

There are always other ways to train your body and keep things fun and fresh. Get outside and go for some long hikes, try indoor or outdoor climbing, or add swimming or running to your routine.

7. Train with a friend

A lot of people choose to train alone in order to focus on their workout without distractions. But training with a friend can be fun, and is a great way to keep your fitness motivation on a rolling boil.

8. Find new tunes

For many people, music and fitness motivation go hand-in-hand. If you’ve been listening to the same tracks for as long as you can remember, it’s probably time to get some fresh tunes for your music player to help fuel your workouts. Aside from the major music services like iTunes and Spotify, try checking out Bandcamp to discover new music from up-and-coming independent artists.

9. Join a fitness class

Getting involved in a class can expose you to new exercises and workout techniques, and has the added benefit of making you accountable to your classmates and instructor, giving you extra fitness motivation to live up to your commitments to yourself.

10. Get a personal trainer

A personal trainer can custom-design a fitness program that will help you reach your goals in the shortest possible time, and motivate you to stick with the program even during those periods when you feel disinterested, discouraged, or would rather just slack off.
