5 Easy Steps to Improved Fitness and Health
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
Sure, that was easy for the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu to say, but I doubt he ever stepped into a crowded, noisy corporate fitness center, full of muscle-bound men and swimsuit-model-caliber women. That can be an intimidating sight. Likewise, your new fitness program can seem daunting.
So rather than trying to change your entire lifestyle all at once, why not try taking some simple steps toward improved health and fitness today?
Step 1: Hydrate
Next time you step into a place that sells water bottles – look for one you like and buy it. That may sound too easy, but research shows people who carry a water bottle (with water inside) are much more likely to be much more hydrated than their non bottle carrying counterparts. And considering other research that shows the vast majority of Americans suffer from immune system-weakening dehydration, sipping is a step toward fitness.
Step 2: Eat fresh
Next time you’re at a place that sells food – pass on the processed stuff. That one rule can replace most any complicated and expensive diet. Instead, get something fresh. Within a week or two, you’ll probably notice you have more energy at times you felt groggy before.
Step 3: Micronutrients
Next time you step into a place that sells vitamins, find a good multi-vitamin and buy a one-month supply. The plant-based vitamins are preferred by a lot of nutritionists. They’re a bit more expensive, but you’re worth it. Hey, did you just take another step?
Step 4: Wake up with exercise
Next time you step out of bed, do a few squats, push-ups and sits ups. Ten of each seems like a good start, doesn’t it? Of course, this new addition to your routine isn’t meant to turn you into an Olympic athlete overnight. What it will do is wake up your body and mind and — sooner than you might think — create a healthy habit that can lead to a fitness-oriented lifestyle. Guess what? You just took another step.
Step 5: Sleep better
Before the next time you head off to bed, try a few things that will ensure you slumber rather than struggle through the night. Stop consuming caffeine and minimize sugar intake four to five hours before bedtime. Turn off all your electronic devices, including the TV, at least one hour before bedtime. Make a list of things to do for the next day. This will allow your mind to relax. Finally, make your bedroom as dark, cold, and quiet as you can. Plenty of sleep studies show we sleep better in colder temperatures, and even a small amount of light or noise can disturb sleep patterns. This step might be a huge change for you, but you’ll soon see it can take you further toward your health and fitness goals than almost anything else you can do.
Don’t look now, but you just took five easy steps forward in changing your lifestyle and dramatically improving your fitness. What’s your next step?
